Coach and Volunteer Resources

Positive and enthusiastic volunteers are needed to coach with Just Compete Sports programs. No previous coaching experience is required. We provide rules, practice-planning tools, and league support to help new and returning coaches succeed.

Why Coach?

Coaching a youth sports team can be a tremendously rewarding experience. It gives you the opportunity to help young athletes learn the game in a fun, safe, and encouraging environment while modeling teamwork, sportsmanship, patience, and respect. For parents and guardians who coach their own child, the shared experience can also create meaningful memories that last well beyond the season.

Coach Responsibilities

Volunteer coaches are expected to:

  • Coach a team of boys and girls ages 4–18.
  • Lead scheduled practices and games.
  • Teach age-appropriate football fundamentals.
  • Promote sportsmanship, fair play, and participation.
  • Provide a safe, positive, and organized environment.
  • Learn and follow league rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide every player with equal playing time.
  • Put each player’s experience and development ahead of winning.
  • Communicate schedules, expectations, and updates with families.

Coach Qualifications

Previous coaching experience is not required. Volunteers must be willing to:

  • Complete and pass the required background check.
  • Be enthusiastic, dependable, and organized.
  • Be patient, especially with new and younger players.
  • Make a positive player experience the priority.
  • Learn the rules and use the resources provided by the league.

How to Volunteer

  • Register as a volunteer. During your child’s registration, select the option to volunteer as a head coach or assistant coach.
  • Complete your volunteer information. Provide the requested information for your volunteer profile and background check.
  • Watch for confirmation. After your background check is approved, the league will confirm your placement and provide information about the preseason coaches meeting.
  • Register separately if needed. If your child is already registered, use the applicable TeamSnap coach/volunteer registration link for your program and location, then select the appropriate volunteer role.
  • Help us match you with the correct roster. Email 365@justcompete.org with the player’s name and league location.

Before the Season

Please complete the following steps before your first practice or game:

  • Finish the volunteer registration and background-check process.
  • Attend the preseason coaches meeting or review the materials provided by the league.
  • Read the official NFL FLAG rules and local safety and conduct policies.
  • Download MOJO and prepare an age-appropriate practice plan.
  • Introduce yourself to your players’ families and explain how team communication will work.
  • Confirm your roster, schedule, and equipment requirements.

NFL FLAG Player Equipment & Game-Day Guide

Be ready to play! Proper equipment helps keep NFL FLAG safe, fair, and fun.

Game-Day Essentials

Players should arrive with an NFL FLAG belt and flags, game jersey, athletic shorts or pants, mouthguard, and athletic shoes or approved non-metal cleats.

Flag Belt Fit

Wear one flag on each side of the hips. Flags must remain fully visible, jerseys should not cover them, and extra belt length may be trimmed if needed. Do not twist, tuck, or alter the belt.

Jersey & Uniform

Wear the assigned game jersey and choose shorts or pants that do not block access to the flags.

Mouthguard Required

A mouthguard is required for participation. Bring it to every practice and game; a backup is a good idea.

Shoes

Athletic shoes and approved rubber/non-metal cleats are allowed. Metal cleats are not permitted.

Quick Coach & Family Check

Before every game, confirm the flag belt fits correctly, two flags are attached and visible, the jersey is not covering the flags, the mouthguard is in place, shoes are secure, and no unsafe or prohibited equipment is being worn.

Just Compete Reminder

NFL FLAG is about learning the game, sportsmanship, confidence, and fun. When players are properly equipped, they can focus on playing, improving, and enjoying the game.

Coaching Tips & Guidelines

As a coach, you are in a position of trust and leadership. Your approach can shape whether players enjoy the sport, build confidence, and want to keep playing. Whether you are an experienced coach or leading a team for the first time, the goal is to create a fun, safe, positive learning environment.

Put Safety First

Teach players from the beginning that NFL FLAG is a limited-contact sport. Stop tackling, blocking, rough play, and other unsafe behavior immediately. Reinforce safe movement and flag pulling during every practice.

Everybody Plays

Flag football is designed to give every player a chance to contribute to the team. Emphasize participation, teamwork, and shared success so players understand that every role matters.

Model Good Sportsmanship

Players follow the example set by their coaches. Treat officials, opponents, families, and fellow coaches with respect. Recognize good play by both teams and lead an appropriate postgame handshake or high-five line.

Teach the Game in Steps

Begin with simple skills and concepts. Introduce more advanced plays only after players understand the basics. Clear instruction and repetition are more effective than giving young players too much information at once.

Keep Football Fun

Create an environment where players feel comfortable learning, making mistakes, and trying again. A successful season helps children build confidence, enjoy their teammates, and want to continue playing.

Have Fun

Thank you for volunteering your time. Youth sports should create positive memories for players, families, and coaches. Bring energy, encouragement, and perspective to each practice and game, and help your team enjoy the season.

Ten Coaching Guidelines

1. Teach rather than command. Help players understand the game and improve their skills. Coaching is not about an adult’s personal recognition or win-loss record.

2. Protect every player. Place player safety and well-being ahead of every competitive decision.

3. Be patient. Do not push children beyond reasonable limits. Football should be a positive part of their week.

4. Care about the person. Value each child as a person first and an athlete second.

5. Use positive instruction. Set meaningful goals, recognize effort, and correct mistakes without discouraging the player.

6. Respect the rules. Rules create a consistent game and help protect everyone on the field.

7. Never teach misconduct. Do not encourage players to exploit the rules, use illegal contact, or put another player at risk.

8. Demonstrate sportsmanship. Stay composed during games and keep the attention on the players.

9. Honor the trust of families. Parents and players rely on coaches to create a safe and constructive experience.

10. Measure growth, not just wins. Judge success by player development, teamwork, confidence, and the respect players show one another—regardless of the final score.

Our Coaching Standard

Our goal is simple: create a youth sports experience that is fun, safe, respectful, and positive for every player.

Compete hard. Respect the game. Protect the kids. Set the example.
